Original Mattel Football “Pocket Football” TV Commercial — 16mm Film Reel
Do you collect the most collectible Mattel handheld games from the ’70s—Football, Basketball, Battlestar Galactica Space Alert, Missile Attack, and Ski Slalom? Well, look at this.
This is an original 30-second, 16mm television commercial for Mattel’s first electronic Football game. Not a recording of the ad. Not a reproduction. The actual film reel, with its labeled box, from the era when Mattel was showing the world that a football game could fit in your hand.
Watch the commercial and you see the entire pitch come alive: football players, the original white handheld, close-ups of its glowing field, and the retail box. Then comes the collector detail I love most. The final shot calls it “MATTEL ELECTRONICS POCKET FOOTBALL.” You can see that early name right on the film.
The box is marked “OGILVY & MATHER / MATTEL / ELECTRONIC FOOTBALL I / COLOR 30 SECS,” and the footage bears a © Mattel, Inc. 1978 notice. It was discovered by a local station employee, stored correctly, and the film is not brittle.
If your shelf already holds Mattel’s finest handhelds, imagine this reel and box at the center of the display—with a few frames from the commercial enlarged and framed above it. You would own the game and the original advertising that made kids want it. That is a showpiece few handheld collections will ever have.
