Remember when a doll could make you stop in front of the television and call someone into the room? Mattel’s Love Notes dolls had that kind of charm. Press the colorful hearts on a doll’s hands, feet, and outfit, and each one played a musical note. Children could use the notes to make their own tunes. The line included Nellie, Lilty, Melody, and Bucky, each with a different look.
Now imagine owning the actual television commercial that introduced that magic to kids.
This is an original 16mm, 30-second color film reel for Mattel’s Love Notes dolls. The production sleeve identifies Mattel, advertising agency Ogilvy & Mather, and the spot titled “LOVE NOTES.” The photographed frames show the dolls together beneath the Love Notes name and Mattel logo, followed by close-ups that bring the toy’s musical idea to life. One frame carries a © Mattel, Inc. 1974 mark.
