This is an exquisite Japanese antique hanging scroll (Kakejiku) delicately hand-painted with fine ink and mineral colors on silk, portraying a charming small bird resting among autumn bush clover and bellflowers by renowned Osaka painter Taisui Suma (須磨對水), housed in its original artist-signed wooden storage box (Tomobako).

Condition: This scroll is in exceptionally clean and beautiful antique condition with only faint, natural signs of age consistent with a well-preserved silk scroll. The delicate brushwork of the bush clover foliage, the soft blue bellflowers, and the fine plumage of the small bird remain crisp, vibrant, and beautifully intact. The original wooden storage box shows natural wood grain and gentle vintage patina. Please inspect all photos carefully for detailed condition. Description: This poetic Kacho-ga (bird-and-flower) masterpiece was created by Taisui Suma (須磨對水) (1868–1955), an eminent Nihonga painter born in Osaka. Having studied under Toshui Kubota (久保田桃水) in the tradition of the Maruyama-Shijo school's Hoen Nishiyama, Suma achieved lasting prominence in the Kansai art scene for his seasonal natural compositions, which were treasured in classical tea gatherings and fine dining establishments. Notably, Suma is celebrated in cultural history as the respected figure who bestowed the auspicious name upon the world-renowned traditional restaurant "Kitcho." Titled "Akikusa" (Autumn Grasses and Bird), this painting captures an endearing small bird perched peacefully amidst autumn bush clover (Hagi) and blooming bellflowers (Kikyo). In Japanese aesthetic tradition, autumn flora evokes a refined sense of seasonal harmony, while the songbird symbolizes peace, gentleness, and natural joy. Accompanied by its authentic wooden box bearing the artist's handwritten brushed title and signature, this scroll serves as a distinguished centerpiece for a tea ceremony alcove, art collection, or sophisticated modern interior. The lower left of the silk bears the artist's signature "對水 (Taisui)" alongside his authentic red seal stamp.
