This artwork is a vintage Jacobean crewel embroidery bell pull. This particular design is the "Tudor Jacobean Bell Pull", a well-known historic embroidery pattern originally designed by famed textile expert Louise Chrimes.
It features classic Jacobean crewelwork elements, showcasing a winding, stylized tree trunk (the "Tree of Life") woven with large exotic blossoms, acorns, textured leaves, and rich blue and green wool embroidery thread.
A "bell pull" was historically a long, heavy fabric band used in grand homes to ring for servants. In the 20th century, they became highly popular decorative textile wall hangings.
The piece is finished with traditional decorative brass metal hangers at the top and a pulling ring at the bottom.
This canvas backing is signed and dated 1975, it was hand-stitched and completed by a skilled artisan named V. Riffel using the Louise Chrimes pattern kit.
This piece measures 59.5 inches by 6 inches.
