Walt Disney Studios, Fantasia 1940. Rare double-sided original character concept drawings by Frank Follmer for Fantasia, featuring studies for the Pastoral Symphony and Dance of the Hours segments.
This exceptional sheet of artist’s paper captures the creative process behind two beloved segments of Walt Disney’s groundbreaking 1940 masterpiece Fantasia. The front side contains six character study drawings of the graceful female Centaurettes from the “Pastoral Symphony” segment (Beethoven’s Sixth Symphony). The reverse of the same sheet features six additional character study drawings of the elegant ostrich ballerina Madame Upanova from the “Dance of the Hours” sequence (Ponchielli). These preliminary concept studies offer a rare behind-the-scenes glimpse into how Disney artists developed the memorable characters and whimsical designs that brought classical music to life in animation.
Frank Follmer worked at Walt Disney Studios from the late 1930s through the early 1940s, contributing to several landmark productions including Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Pinocchio, and Fantasia. His concept and model-sheet work helped shape the distinctive look of characters across these films, and surviving original drawings by Follmer are highly sought after by collectors of Golden Age Disney art.
The double-sided sheet measures 17.5 x 12 inches and is executed in graphite and crayon on artist’s paper. The front is signed in the lower right in pencil with the artist’s initials “F. F.” It remains in fine condition overall, with only light dampstaining to one edge, and was acquired from a major animation art sale house.
A wonderful and uncommon piece that beautifully illustrates one artist’s hand across two of Fantasia’s most magical sequences. Perfect for the serious Disney animation art collector or anyone building a collection focused on the studio’s early feature era. A true piece of Disney history from the making of one of animation’s greatest achievements.
