Southern Landscape, dated 1963-64, is an oil-and-collage work on board from Williams\'s developing series of imaginary Southern landscapes. A dark tree trunk dominates the vertical composition, surrounded by dense passages of pink, black, orange, and white and scattered floral forms. Williams began developing variations on the Southern Landscape subject during the early 1960s, repeatedly combining vegetation and rural imagery through textured painted and collaged surfaces.
