His formal artistic education began at the drawing school in Besançon under the tutelage of Charles-Antoine Flajoulot, where he demonstrated early promise. His career took a significant turn in 1834 when his work Agar dans le désert earned him a first-place prize and a city-funded scholarship to the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Once in the capital, he entered the studio of the celebrated history painter François-Édouard Picot, where he refined the academic style that would define much of his professional output.Throughout the mid-19th century, Baille was a regular participant in the Paris Salon, exhibiting his works in 1837, 1838, 1839, 1842, 1846, and 1847. His diverse portfolio included large-scale historical and religious scenes, such as Männer - Mittelalter, alongside a significant body of portraiture that featured prominent figures from the Franche-Comté region. He was equally skilled in various media, producing delicate pastels and watercolors in addition to his formal oil paintings. Beyond his personal artistic achievements, Baille was an influential figure in the art community as a member of the Académie de Besançon and a dedicated teacher whose students included notable artists like Félix-Henri Giacomotti and Jules Machard. He remained active in the Besançon art scene until his death on May 22, 1888.
