This is the edition of Alice that turned Wonderland into a nursery. Mabel Lucie Attwell, one of the most collected British illustrators of the last century, gives Carroll's dream world her own rosy, round-cheeked treatment: a solemn red-haired Alice in a spotted frock, a fussy waistcoated White Rabbit, a spindly Hatter in a stovepipe hat, and a Mock Turtle weeping into a red handkerchief on the sand. Twelve full-page colour plates carry the great set pieces, The Pool of Tears, The Pig Baby, The Mad-Hatter's Tea-Party, The Cheshire Cat, The Mock Turtle's Story, each with a printed caption in blue, and dozens of line drawings run through the text, tumbling down margins and creeping across the foot of the page.
Original gilt pictorial cloth, firm and square, with rubbing and light scratching to the boards, bumped corners, fraying and small losses at the head and tail of the spine and along the joints, gilt still bright, gilt page edges, foxing to the endpapers and scattered through the text, a small pencil mark to the front free endpaper, ink scribble to page 22 and childish colouring to the line drawing on page 10.
