Rare Antique James W. Tufts Boston Soup Tureen - Pattern #853
The Design: For your consideration is a stunning 19th-century quadruple-plated soup tureen by the prestigious James W. Tufts of Boston. This particular piece, Pattern #853, is a highly sought-after example of Victorian Nautical Aesthetic design. The body features exceptional high-relief repoussé work depicting large scallop shells and sea flora. The lid is designed with a swirling \"wave\" motif that carries the eye toward a decorative textured finial. The ornate handles are cast in a stylized maritime motif, characteristic of the fine craftsmanship Tufts was known for in the late 1880s.
Markings: The base is clearly stamped with the James W. Tufts Boston hallmark, \"Warranted Quadruple Plate,\" and the pattern number 853.
Condition:
Exterior: The silver plating remains remarkably bright and intact on the exterior, with very minimal \"bleeding\" of the base metal. There are no major dents.
Interior: The interior may need cleaning as there is some food residue. It also shows some minor antique pitting (common for a piece this age). The underside of the lid has been polished in one spot to demonstrate the quality and show the finish is fully intact.
Lid: The lid fits securely, and the finial is tight.
