Antique 17th c.Copperplate Engraving- Renaud & Armide.
This is “Renaud et Armide” (Rinaldo and Armida), after Nicolas Poussin (1594–1665) — the leading painter of French classical Baroque, whose original painting of this subject is a celebrated masterpiece. Engraved by Gérard Audran (1640–1703), widely regarded as the greatest French engraver of the 17th century, especially renowned for his engravings after Poussin and Le Brun (including the famous Battles of Alexander series). Published in Paris “aux 2 Pilliers d’Or,” with royal privilege. The subject illustrates Tasso’s Gerusalemme Liberata (Canto 15–16): the sorceress Armida, seeking to kill the sleeping knight Rinaldo, is struck by his beauty and falls in love instead — one of the most famous romantic subjects in Baroque art.
Condition: strong, richly detailed impression with excellent figural and armor rendering, full sheet with the complete narrative inscription and “Ce’st le 15. et 16.e Chant” intact, moderate staining/foxing in the lower margin as visible in your photos — worth noting on the tag.
An identical impression, with matching inscriptions, is held in the collection of the Musee d\'art et d\'historie de Geneve
