Brief History: Minted during the heart of Christendom under the infamous Emperor Frederick II. Frederick II was the King of Sicily, Jerusalem, Germany, and Italy as well as the Emperor of the Holy Roman Emperor. He was brought up under Innocent III in Italy to be a powerful King for the Church. He was crowned by Pope Honorius II in 1220 as Holy Roman Emperor. He was given the mission to make a powerful Catholic Empire similar to that of the Carolingians under Charlemagne. His pride overcame him upon having this immense power. He was a constant headache for the church and became bitter enemies of numerous popes (most notable Gregory IX). He was excommunicated 4 times over various disputes between him and the pope. He did however lead the 6th Crusade which was successful in over taking Jerusalem. This was done without Church approval. He set sail for the Holy land in 1228AD. He used his negotiation skills to capture Jerusalem with the Ayyuoffer Sultan in exchange for a 10 year truce. He then infamously crowned himself King of Jerusalem in the Church of the Holy Sepulcher. (March 18, 1229AD)
