This product is an original hand-colored copper engraving by Johann Elias Ridinger, depicting the true seat of the rider. The engraving is from the Baroque/Roccoco period, dating back to no earlier than 1734 and by all signs I can find is from the original strikes.
It was later mounted on cardboard ( common in 1700 and 1800s engravings or may have been mounted later). Please view all photos and enlarge and determine for yourself as this is sold as is no returns.
Remote chance 1800s later strike of original plate but does not show signs of that as wear on the copper plate done later would show signs of wear which would create way less detail on the engraving, which there are no such signs of wear on this piece ( view pictures and enlarge) so as you can see this is a very clearly detailed piece.
To detail for things one looks for to determine age, the piece has rounded corners square border around the engraving ( expected on originals there should be this which is where the edges of the copper plate went to, rounded corners to prevent tearing, you can see the change in paper from the pressing of the copper plate, vibrant hand tint color, correct looking texture to the paper consistent with an original strike, extreme minute detail consistent with an original, no pixels ( which one would find on a 20th century reprint) no missing details ( which one would find on an 1800s later strike from the same plate, etc.
The piece is hand colored and retains the original detailed work.
It is a very handsome piece of art.
The title in German roughly translates to “The Posture of a Rider as He Should Be, Elegant and Good on a Horse”.
Created in Augsburg, Germany, this 21” x 16" original engraving features intricate details of equestrian themes and horse riding. Please note wear around edges and color of border, minor scuffs which once properly matted and framed will not show. Signed by the artist and titled in 3 languages ( French German and Latin, the piece also has the correct signature in the engraving for the original period.
There is an old framing label on the back from what looks like earlier 1900s for framing of 6 pieces with glass so likely someone had the whole series, we now have the one piece unframed which retails alone for up to $900 unframed, this unique piece of art is a true representation of Ridinger's Old Master Print style, showcasing his craftsmanship and expertise in copper engraving.
This piece will be wrapped with great care to ensure no damage and will be fully insured as well.
