A Journal, Being an Account of a Short Tour or Excursion from Edinburgh, 1787. With a Latin epigraph from Virgil beginning \"Disce, puer, virtutem ex me verumque laborem.\" Written 20 July 1788 by W. A. Printed at the \"Nairnshire Telegraph\" Office, Leopold Street, Nairn, 1912.
In April 1787 four young Edinburgh men set off on foot for thirteen days and covered the middle of Scotland at walking pace. Their diary records the ferry from Leith, the salmon fisheries of the Tay, the Royal Palace of Scone, Dunkeld and the Hermitage with its mirrored room above the falls, then Blair, Kenmore, Killin, Loch Lomond, Dumbarton and Glasgow before the road home. The writer notices everything: the price of fish, the state of the inns, a travelling comedian who kept them awake till midnight, the manners of the gentry and the poor alike. The manuscript drifted to Australia, was sold in Sydney, returned to Scotland in 1880 and finally reached print in 1912 in a small Nairn printing. First-hand Georgian travel writing from the age of Burns, and rarely seen.
