DESCRIPTION:
The 1799 large cent is one of those coins that will always be “tough” (highly elusive, exceptionally rare and difficult to find). The 1799 large cent was produced at a time when the U.S. Mint was having problems with copper supply. Much of the copper supply came from England and relations between the two countries were frosty. Shipping copper across the Atlantic was slow, and new trade restrictions and war were always on the horizon. In 1799, the copper used to make the 1799 large cent was from the American firm of Coltman Brothers. The copper was rough and dark, adding to the difficulty of finding a nice 1799 cent today. The 1799 100% copper large cent had a mintage of just 42,540. It is one of the rarest of American cents. This 1799 large cent was donated to our shop. We are not experts in coins but we were taken by its beauty and rich history. The donor had it in a box identified as 1799. The coin was designated to be VG (very good) - well-worn with moderate-to-heavy circulation wear across the entire surface. It was cleaned. Diameter is 29 mm. We do not see a 1799 mark - it is very worn. Thank you for looking at this important part of American history!Local pick-ups okay.
