An important early American Anabaptist/Mennonite religious work documenting Christian martyrs and the history of the Anabaptist faith.
This is a large, heavy early-19th-century volume retaining its old full leather binding with raised spine bands and surviving metal clasp hardware.
Especially interesting is the historical material preserved with this particular copy. The book contains numerous old handwritten family/genealogical entries with names and dates, along with loose pieces of period ephemera that appear to have been kept inside the book over generations. These include an 1872 calendar, handwritten notes/calculations and other old printed material.
These items will remain with the book and are included in the sale.
Condition: This is a genuine 212-year-old book in heavily used, unrestored antique condition. The leather binding shows substantial wear, cracking, losses and deterioration, particularly along the spine and edges. There are loose/damaged pages, edge tears, staining, foxing, discoloration, water marks and other age-related wear throughout. Some inserted material is torn or incomplete.
Despite its condition, much of the printed text remains remarkably clear and readable.
I have not verified that every original leaf/page is present, so the book is being sold as-is and should not be assumed complete.
The extensive handwriting, family records and material found inside have intentionally been left intact. Nothing has been cleaned, restored or removed.
Please examine all photographs carefully as they are an important part of the condition description.
A fascinating piece of early Pennsylvania German, Mennonite/Anabaptist, religious, printing and genealogical history.
