1815 — Complete in 16 Volumes
A complete 16-volume edition of Jean-François de La Harpe's extensive course of literature, covering ancient literature, the literature of the age of Louis XIV, eighteenth-century literature and philosophy, and concluding with the analytical index in Volume XVI.
The set is attractively bound with decorated leather spines and corners over marbled paper-covered boards, with leather title and volume labels. The bindings are matching in overall appearance and present very well together as a complete early-19th-century set.
Approximate dimensions: Each volume measures approximately 5.5" tall × 4" wide, with thickness varying by volume.
An old ownership inscription reading “Théodore Guilmin” appears in multiple volumes. The name is recorded here as provenance only; no attribution or identification of the former owner is being made. Volume I also contains additional old handwritten names/notations at the front.
Condition
Complete 16-volume set with all volumes present. Antique bindings show expected rubbing, wear and areas of leather/paper covering loss, more pronounced on several volumes. Interiors are generally clean and well preserved for their age.
Volumes I and III each lack two preliminary/title leaves; the main text in these volumes is present as inspected. Several other volumes have loose or detached preliminary leaves which are present and included. Volume XV has several detached/torn leaves and sections; the loose material examined is retained and will be included with the set.
A detached errata leaf is also present. The detached errata leaf and loose leaves/fragments associated with Volume XV will be protected in a separate sleeve and included with the set.
Scattered old paper repairs/reinforcements, foxing, toning, staining, marks and ownership inscriptions may be present throughout, consistent with the age and history of the books.
