1829 Baron de Cetto Viscount Melville Access Portsmouth Dockyard de Lotzbeck For Sale

1829 Baron de Cetto to Viscount Melville – Portsmouth Dockyard Request

A neat diplomatic note written from 11 Grosvenor Street, London, dated 3 September 1829, in which Baron de Cetto, Bavarian Envoy to the Court of St James’s, presents his compliments to Lord Viscount Melville, then First Lord of the Admiralty. He requests permission for Baron Lotzbeck and his Lady to visit Portsmouth Dockyard.

The “Baron Lotzbeck” mentioned is likely to be Freiherr Maximilian von Lotzbeck (1789–1843), a Bavarian Chamberlain and Court Councillor active in diplomatic and court circles at this date. Identification remains cautious, but is consistent with the rank, period, and Bavarian networks associated with de Cetto.

Manuscript: Single sheet, neatly written in brown ink, with original folds. Addressed to The Right Hon’ble Lord Viscount Melville.

Administrative notes:

• A later pencil annotation on the inner page reads “Directions given accordingly”, indicating that the request was approved.

• The back page carries a contemporary ink docket: “Baron de Cetto. 3 Sep 1829. Baron Lotzbeck to see Portsmouth Dockyard”, consistent with Admiralty filing as photos. All items can be returned for a full refund if found to be not as described. Complete with a digital .jpg (as attached) Certificate of Authenticity & Provenance.
