Rare Late-date Adjustment Marks!
1833 Capped Buts Half Dollar
O-103A R3 (Not on slab)
PCGS AU Details
Richly toned, lustrous, and somewhat colorful under close inspection, especially on the reverse. Faint micro hairlines under the patina confirm the Cleaned designation from PCGS. O-103A is a late die state, defined by flattened features and drawn stars, and there is just a dusting of rub over the highest points. This is an AU55+ in terms of wear, with outstanding, well-rounded, full detail for the variety.
The unusual featurehereis the presence of planchet adjustment marks! The early US Mint regularly filed the faces of planchets that were over-weight, and parallel filing lines, known as Adjustment Marks, were not always obliterated by the dies and would show up on the finished coins. These are seldom seen after 1807. It is quite peculiar to see Bonafede adjustment marks on an 1833 half dollar. Rare and of great interest to the specialist.
