1840 East India Company Silver Rupee Victoria Divided Legend Fine-Very Fine For Sale

In 1840 the East India Company put the young Queen Victoria on its silver rupee, replacing the Mughal-style coinage that had circulated for generations with William Wyon\'s crowned portrait, part of the uniform coinage the Company had introduced across its territories in 1835. This is the divided legend type, with VICTORIA on the left and QUEEN on the right, split by the bust, a distinct variety collected separately from the continuous legend rupees and a staple of any British India collection. These rupees passed through markets and bazaars from Bombay to Calcutta and carried the Company\'s authority right up to the eve of Crown rule.The date reads a full, sharp 1-8-4-0, the ear, back curls and ribbon of the portrait remain well defined, and the reverse is noticeably fresh, with crisp wreath leaves and a bold ONE RUPEE alongside the Urdu legend. The surfaces carry even grey natural toning with no sign of cleaning.
