Published in Boston, this early American women\'s periodical contains stories, poetry, essays, moral and religious instruction, material concerning motherhood and family life, and writings intended for young women. The volume also retains approximately four original period engraved plates [change this to the exact number if you count them before listing], adding considerable visual interest to the collection.
Bound in an early half-leather binding with marbled paper-covered boards. The spine retains gilt lettering for Mother\'s Assistant.
This copy also has historic Library Company of Philadelphia provenance, including institutional/deaccession markings and the Library Company bookplate.
Condition: Antique ex-library volume showing substantial wear consistent with its approximately 177 years of age and institutional use. Binding is heavily rubbed and worn with significant surface wear to the leather and marbled boards, worn corners and edges, and wear at the spine extremities. Interior exhibits age toning, foxing, spotting and staining, along with occasional marks and other signs of use. Library Company markings/bookplate are present. Please review all photographs carefully for the best assessment of condition.
Despite its condition, this is a fascinating surviving complete 1849 run of an early American women\'s periodical, retaining multiple original engraved illustrations.
