Good overall. Sound and square, with a firm binding and both boards securely attached. The red leather covers exhibit heavy exterior wear, including substantial rubbing and scuffing, worn corners and edges, fraying and small losses at the spine ends, and areas of fading and wear to the gilt decoration. These issues are cosmetic rather than structural. The interior is generally well preserved, with age toning, occasional light foxing and scattered spots. A single prior ownership inscription appears on the front free endpaper; otherwise unmarked. All edges of text block are gilt in 22k gold
An impressive mid-nineteenth-century volume bound in red leather with elaborate gilt pictorial decoration depicting Christ, the Crucifixion, biblical figures, and Gothic architectural motifs. The richly decorated spine bears the title Fleetwood’s Life of Christ. Illustrated throughout with detailed black-and-white biblical engravings, including scenes of the Adoration of the Wise Men and the parable of the Wise and Foolish Virgins. The substantial text block retains its period appearance, with naturally toned page edges.
Published in Philadelphia in 1853, this edition presents Fleetwood’s extensive account of the life of Jesus Christ, from the Incarnation through the Crucifixion, Resurrection, and Ascension. It also includes accounts of the evangelists, apostles, and early Christian martyrs, together with a history of the Jewish people and a continuation of that history by Fleetwood. The elaborate gilt binding and engraved biblical illustrations make this a particularly striking example of nineteenth-century American religious publishing.
