A highly attractive Florida obsolete issue, this 1859-70 $2 Tallahassee Rail Road Company remainder is certified PMG Gem Uncirculated 65 EPQ, offering superb preservation, strong eye appeal, and desirable Exceptional Paper Quality.

The face presents a finely engraved railroad vignette at center, depicting a locomotive and train crossing a bridge through a landscape, an especially appropriate motif for this issuer. The obligation reads “Receivable in Payment of All Our Dues,” with “State of Florida” above and the bold issuer title “The Tallahassee Rail Road Company” across the lower center. A surveying instrument vignette appears at lower left, reinforcing the transportation and infrastructure theme, while a portrait of a young girl anchors the right side. Green security tinting, ornate counters, and repeating “TWO” micro-lettering provide depth and complexity to the design. The reverse is equally appealing, printed in green with elaborate lathework, large “2” counters, and a bold central “Tallahassee Rail Road Co.” panel, all executed by the American Bank Note Company of New York.

PMG has certified this note as Gem Uncirculated 65 EPQ. The note displays excellent paper originality, fresh surfaces, strong color, and pleasing margins for the type. The EPQ designation confirms fully original paper quality without adverse processing, an important distinction for collectors of obsolete and private scrip. As a remainder, the note is unsigned and without serial number, consistent with its unissued status.

The Tallahassee Rail Road Company was among Florida’s important early transportation enterprises, linking inland commerce with Gulf Coast shipping routes. Obsolete notes and scrip of this nature were produced during a period when local banks, railroads, merchants, and corporations often issued paper money or payable instruments to facilitate regional trade. Florida obsolete currency is especially popular due to the state’s relatively limited note-issuing landscape and the strong demand for railroad-related material.

Choice Florida obsolete notes are actively collected, and examples certified at the Gem level with EPQ are considerably more desirable than typical circulated survivors. This $2 Tallahassee Rail Road Company remainder combines historical significance, railroad subject matter, attractive American Bank Note Company engraving, and premium certified preservation.

A handsome and well-preserved Florida railroad obsolete note, ideally suited for an advanced collection of Southern scrip, railroad currency, or high-grade United States obsolete paper money.
