1864 QUEEN VICTORIA 4d RED + 6d LILAC STAMP ON RARE COVER TO NINE ORANGES BURROWANG NSW AUSTRALIA.
This 1864 rare cover sent from Scotland to New South Wales demonstrates the complexities of colonial Australian mail delivery. Transmitting the 10d treaty rate, it is franked with a 4d Red (SG 80) and a 6d Lilac (SG 80), both cancelled by Glasgow duplex \"159\" postmarks dated March 23, 1864. Originally addressed to Mr. George Orme at Burrowang \"near Bathurst\", the envelope faced a prolonged journey upon arrival in the colony, as Burrowang was a tiny hamlet that had not yet established its own post office.
Reaching Sydney on May 14, 1864, the cover spent 50 days traveling across regional New South Wales attempting to locate the recipient. It bears extensive backstamps chronicling its path through Bathurst (May 17), Cowra (June 1), Carcoar (June 8), and Bathurst again (July 2). The front displays a deleted manuscript endorsement for \"Carcoar\" alongside a re-direction note instructing to \"try Nine Oranges\". Transit markings on the reverse also include Dumbarton (March 23) and a red London Paid datestamp (March 24), making this an outstanding piece of NSW postal history.
