Good condition. The front endpapers and the gathering immediately following the copyright page have been reinforced. Otherwise sound and square. Mild toning throughout though heavier at prelims. The full leather binding shows wear and rubbing with several small areas of leather loss. All edges gilt.
Bound in full leather with elaborate raised decoration, four raised spine bands, and extensive 22-carat gold tooling. Richly illustrated with eight full-page plates, numerous illustrations throughout the text, and three color maps. 1097 pages followed by 10 pages of publisher’s advertisements.
Issued by subscription in 1875, this substantial first edition presents a sweeping nineteenth-century account of Palestine and Syria based upon the discoveries of contemporary Palestine exploring expeditions. McCabe covers the region’s geography, history, antiquities, inhabitants, and customs, with detailed sections devoted to Jerusalem, Nazareth, Petra, Sinai, and other biblical locations. Its lavish pictorial binding, maps, and abundant illustrations make it an especially striking example of Victorian travel and biblical scholarship.
