Massive antique two-volume illustrated edition of The Poetical Works of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow.
Volume I was published in 1879 by Houghton, Osgood and Company. Volume II was published in 1880 by Houghton, Mifflin and Company. Both were printed by The Riverside Press in Cambridge.
These are exceptionally large and heavy folio-style presentation volumes. Each book weighs approximately 15 pounds, for a combined unpacked weight of approximately 30 pounds. The covers are constructed with unusually thick, heavy weighted boards and are decorated with gilt lettering, lines and ornamental designs.
The volumes contain numerous detailed full-page black-and-white illustrations accompanying Longfellow’s poetry.
Condition is antique and heavily worn externally. The leather bindings show extensive rubbing, scuffing, peeling, surface loss and wear along the edges, corners, joints and spine areas. The gilt cover decoration remains clear and visually striking. Interior pages and illustrations show age toning, occasional marks and normal signs of age but remain attractive overall.
Because of the substantial weight and age of the bindings, the books will be wrapped individually and packed very carefully for shipment.
