Le Duc was the commissioner then and Peter Collier the chemist.This has many beautiful full-page prints of many variety of plants.This edition captures for posterity a snapshot in time of, among other things, the Swine Fever epidemic which slowly became a bigger problem in the U.S.A. in the 1870s and 1880s.Hog cholera (swine fever/swine plague) became a widespread, major crisis in the U.S. during the 1860s, following its initial appearance in Ohio in the 1830s. The federal government first took serious formal notice of the epidemic in 1860, leading the Commissioner of Agriculture and Congress to formally establish the Bureau of Animal Industry in 1884 to combat the massive economic toll. But this edition 1879 edition specifically dedicated a large section to this vexing disease plaguing so many farmers. In 1878, The Commissioner of Agriculture commissioned early formal scientific investigations by veterinary experts like Dr. Detmers and Dr. Salmon and this book carries much of their initial research and is an important record of what happened in the early days of this problem.
Condition: All pages present with a clear print, all charts, maps, illustrations, and color diagrams are clear and in crisp shape. Some damp stain to initial third of books pages at lower right corner. Not affecting text and it is very light.
