A December 1884 two-cent postal stationery envelope mailed from the Central Pacific railroad town of Battle Mountain, Nevada, and addressed — in a careful, self-conscious hand — to Liebig\'s Dispensary at 400 Geary Street, San Francisco, the notorious mail-order \"medical institute\" that blanketed the Great Basin press with advertisements for secret treatment of men\'s private complaints. It is a quiet piece of Western postal history that carries its own small story of frontier isolation and nineteenth-century patent medicine.
1. Postal Markings & Operational Analysis
The Format: A United States 2c carmine-red Washington embossed stamped envelope (postal stationery \"entire\") of the 1883–86 issue, with the oval indicium reading U.S. POSTAGE / TWO CENTS and a numeral 2 at each side. Along the left edge is the printed return request \"If not delivered within 10 days, to be returned to\", left blank by the sender — there is no corner card, which fits a private individual rather than a business. The envelope measures approximately 5½ x 3⅛ inches by the ruler photograph. It is an opened, used entire with the original back flap intact; the paper is toned with light wrinkling and a soft vertical crease, and there is edge wear at the left side.
The Origin Postmark: A bold black circular datestamp reads BATTLE MOUNTAIN, NEV. with DEC 20 1884 in the center. The strike is strong and almost fully legible, with only the lower arc of the town circle weak. The embossed 2c indicium is tied by a separate heavy black killer struck across Washington\'s portrait.
Postal Rates & Law: Two cents was exactly the correct single first-class rate. Under the act of March 3, 1883, the domestic letter rate dropped from three cents to two cents per half ounce effective October 1, 1883 (it was not extended to a full ounce until 1885), so this December 1884 cover sits squarely in the first bracket of the new two-cent era — a nice, clean, on-rate use of the matching 2c entire.
Payment Status: Fully prepaid by the embossed 2c indicium. There are no due, forwarded or advertised markings.
Transit & Receiving Marks: The reverse carries two circular strikes. The lower one is a railway post office datestamp reading SAN FRAN. & OGDEN R.P.O. with DEC 21 1884 — the route that ran the Central Pacific main line through Nevada, the same tracks that gave Battle Mountain its reason to exist. The upper strike is a second San Francisco marking, partly struck across the flap, reading in part SAN FRA… / NVS REC\'D with a December 1884 date. Taken together the markings show a letter posted at a desert rail stop on the evening of December 20 and in San Francisco hands the next day — roughly 450 rail miles in about a day, a good demonstration of how fast the transcontinental mail had become by the mid-1880s.
The Destination Address: Written in pencil in a sloping hand across the face: \"Loiebig\'s Dispansory / San Francisco / Cal\", with \"400 Gary St\" added at lower left. The phonetic misspellings of both \"Liebig\'s Dispensary\" and \"Geary Street\" suggest a writer copying the address by ear or from memory rather than from the firm\'s printed advertisement.
2. Historical Significance
The Addressee: Liebig\'s Dispensary — trading as Dr. Liebig & Co. — operated at 400 Geary Street, San Francisco, with a private entrance around the corner at 405 Mason Street. Through the early and mid-1880s it bought large display advertisements in papers across Nevada and Arizona, including Winnemucca\'s Silver State, promoting \"Liebig\'s Wonderful German Invigorator\" and \"Liebig\'s Invigorator No. 2\" as cures for nervous debility, exhausted vitality, spermatorrhoea and \"lost manhood,\" at a dollar a bottle or six for ten dollars. The advertisements promised that remedies would be sent to any address on receipt of price or C.O.D., that patients could be cured at home, and that the strictest secrecy would be maintained — and boasted that the Dispensary ran an elegant drug store in its own building. That business model is exactly what this envelope embodies: a man in a small Nevada railroad town, far from any specialist, answering a newspaper advertisement by mail and addressing it in pencil, in his own hand, with no return address.
The Origin: Battle Mountain grew up in the late 1860s as a supply point for the Battle Mountain Mining District and moved to the Central Pacific line when the railroad arrived in 1868, becoming a railhead and freighting point for the Lander County camps; its post office was established in 1870, and the 1880 census recorded a population in the low hundreds. A clearly dated 1884 cover from this office, carried on the San Francisco & Ogden R.P.O., is solid Nevada territory-era-adjacent postal history from a small Great Basin office.
