This is an 1885 British Admiralty nautical map or chart of the California Coast as far as Cape Mendocino, updated with printed revisions to 1926 and with manuscript revisions to 1966, as recorded in the bottom-left margin, and is originally based on U.S. Coast Survey charts.
Rendered with meticulous scientific precision, the chart displays hundreds of hydrographic soundings, tracking underwater bathymetry, alongside prominent compass roses indicating magnetic variation across the offshore waters. The coastline outlines key geographic features from the Channel Islands and Point Conception in the south, up through Monterey Bay and the San Francisco Golden Gate, to the rugged headlands of Northern California. A profile of the Farallon Islands near San Francisco appears near top-center. Information on lighthouses / lights, bottoms, hazards, shoals, oil rigs near Santa Barbara, and more is included. Note the \'dumping ground\' for explosives off the southwest coast of Santa Catalina Island and another west of San Diego.
