Published in 1885, Achilles Daunt’s In the Land of the Moose, the Bear, and the Beaver carries the subtitle Adventures in the Forests of the Athabasca. Its illustrated green cloth binding combines gilt wildlife scenes with rich red woodland decoration. The front cover remains striking, and the decorated spine makes this a handsome shelf copy.
Inside is a nineteenth-century adventure story set amid the forests and waterways of the Canadian Northwest. The contents promise canoe travel, hunters’ camps, storms, wolves, caribou, and encounters with moose and bear. It is also a period piece: its descriptions of Indigenous peoples reflect the language and attitudes of its illustrated cloth binding with attractive surviving gilt and colored decoration.
