Impressive matched pair of late-19th-century figural sculptures by Nicholas Muller & Sons of New York, each bearing a molded copyright inscription dated 1886.The two classical warriors are depicted in complementary poses wearing elaborate armor, crested helmets and shields. One raises a long removable spear or javelin overhead while holding a short sword; his companion raises his shield while holding a short blade at his side.Each figure stands on an unusually elaborate matching pedestal base decorated with geometric and foliate ornament and a relief portrait medallion.The figures are cast in spelter or related white metal with a dark bronze-colored finish, a material widely used by Nicholas Muller & Sons for its highly detailed decorative metalwork during the late 19th century.Molded inscription:

Contemporary New York directories list the company among dealers/manufacturers of “Clocks and Bronzes,” and the firm exhibited bronze goods at the 1876 Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia.Dimensions: approximately 16.5" tall × 6" wide each.Antique condition with substantial age-related patina, oxidation, finish wear, abrasions and areas of exposed underlying metal.
