Up for sale is a complete 8-volume antique Victorian set of "The Pictorial Edition of the Works of Shakspere." It was edited by Charles Knight and published in New York by P.F. Collier around the 1880s.The set features beautifully embossed forest-green cloth hardcovers. The spines feature decorative gold text and gold profile portraits of Shakespeare. This historical Victorian edition is well known for its highly detailed wood-engraving illustrations throughout.

What truly sets the "Pictorial Edition" apart is its massive volume of illustrations. Charles Knight strongly believed that images could help people better understand historical theater. He spent years searching for historically accurate visual materials. The resulting woodcuts accurately depict the exact clothing, armor, architecture, and interior settings of the eras when the plays were originally set.
Before Knight, most 19th-century publishers heavily altered Shakespeare's words to suit Victorian tastes. Charles Knight rebelled against this by using an imperfect copy of the original 1623 First Folio to meticulously restore and print the text as accurately as possible to Shakespeare’s original vision. When it debuted, literary journals praised it as a magnificent textual achievement.
Most standard Shakespeare sets only print the famous plays. Volume 8 of this set is highly unique because it contains the Shakespeare Apocrypha, historical plays whose authorship is heavily debated, such as The Two Noble Kinsmen, Titus Andronicus, and The Life and Death of Thomas Lord Cromwell. This inclusion makes it a valuable resource for serious literary students.
Condition- This is a beautiful Victorian dark academia complete set.The combination of forest-green cloth bindings and heavy gold-gilt decoration on the spine is the classic design style of the 1880s. In great condition for nearly 150 years old. Pages are intact, clean and free of writing rips or tears. Binding is secure. See photo's for most accurate visual description.
