Beautiful and extensively illustrated late-19th-century Bible story book published by Henry Neil, Philadelphia, in 1892.
The title page describes the volume as:
“The Bible Stories from Genesis to Revelation Told in a Simple and Attractive Style”
Edited by Henry Neil and others, with Russell H. Conwell, noted pastor of The Temple in Philadelphia.
One of the outstanding features of this book is its extraordinary amount of artwork. The title page states that it is:
“Illustrated with over two hundred magnificent full-page engravings.”
The volume is filled throughout with dramatic biblical illustrations, including imagery by/after Gustave Doré, along with numerous other finely executed engravings. Many openings contain one or more large illustrations, making this a particularly impressive Victorian-era illustrated religious book.
Large format, measuring approximately 10.5–10.75 inches tall.
The original pictorial cloth binding remains very attractive, featuring an elaborate illustrated front cover depicting Christ with children. A handwritten Christmas 1892 presentation inscription appears at the front, giving the book additional period character.
CONDITION – PLEASE READ CAREFULLY
This is a 132+ year-old book in fragile antique condition and should be handled with care.
The original pictorial cloth covers and spine remain attached. Exterior shows expected age wear including rubbing, discoloration/soiling, edge and corner wear, and fraying/wear at the spine ends.
The binding and text block are fragile, with internal weakness/separation visible in places.
One illustrated leaf, “The Flood,” is completely detached and has substantial tears and losses along its blank outer margins. This leaf is included and the damage is clearly photographed.
Pages show age toning and occasional edge wear consistent with age. There is a handwritten Christmas 1892 presentation inscription near the front.
The book appears substantially complete based on examination, and the extensive illustrations remain present throughout; however, because of the age and fragile condition, the volume has not been individually collated page-by-page and completeness of every individual leaf cannot be guaranteed.
Despite its structural condition, this remains a beautiful and highly displayable antique illustrated volume, with an exceptional number of full-page biblical engravings.
