This SALE! is for an original 1895FIRST EDITION of "A NEW ALICE IN THE OLD

WONDERLAND" by Anna M. Richards, published by J. B. Lippincott Company of

Philadelphia.

Anna M. Richards' 1895 novelA New Alice in the Old Wonderlandis significant because it is one of the most important "Alice imitations," expanding Lewis Carroll's Wonderland tradition for American audiences and showing how Carroll's influence inspired creative reinterpretations in the late 19th century.

Richards’A New Alice in the Old Wonderlandis not just a curiosity—it’sakey artifact in the evolution of Carroll-inspired fantasy, showing how Wonderland became a cultural playground for other writers and artists.

🌟 Why It Matters

Alice imitation:Literary scholars, such as Carolyn Sigler, regard Richards’ book as one of the most notable works inspired by Carroll’sAlice's Adventures in Wonderland(1865) andThrough the Looking-Glass(1871). Itdemonstrateshow Carroll's imaginative world quickly became fertile ground for reinterpretation.

American perspective:The protagonist, Alice Lee, is an American girl who coincidentally shares the famous name. Her journey into Wonderland reflects how Carroll's British fantasy was adapted for U.S. readers, blending familiarity with novelty.

Family collaboration:The book was illustrated with 67 drawings by Richards' daughter, Anna M. Richards Jr., closely modeled after John Tenniel's original illustrations. This mother-daughter collaboration highlights the domestic, creative culture of the time.

Cultural continuity:By reintroducing Carroll's characters (the White Rabbit, the Queen of Hearts, the Cheshire Cat, etc.), Richards' novel reinforced Wonderland as a shared cultural mythos, ensuring its longevity beyond Carroll's own works.

Publication context:Released in October 1895 by J. B. Lippincott in Philadelphia, the book shows how American publishers capitalized on Carroll's popularity, making Wonderland part of transatlantic literary culture.

Public domain legacy:Today, the book is in the public domain, allowing modern readers to explore how Carroll's influence spread and how derivative works shaped the reception of fantasy literature.

📚 Broader Significance

Literary history:It illustrates the phenomenon of “imitative sequels” in children’s literature, where beloved characters and settings were reimagined by other authors.

Cultural transmission:The novel bridges British and American literary traditions, showing how Carroll’s whimsical style resonated across cultures.

Artistic homage:The illustrations, while derivative of Tenniel, underscore the importance of visual continuity in preserving Wonderland’s identity.

This book will delight any reader thirsting for a

"New Adventure" in Carroll's wondrous world.

If you've ever heard of the expression:"If it ain't broke, don't fix it," that often

applies to most things. Take the classic "Alice in Wonderland" by Lewis Carroll -

who would dare try to touch that phenomenal book?

Published thirty years after the initial publication of "Alice's Adventures in

Wonderland," Anna Matlack Richards' "A New Alice in the Old Wonderland" is

a splendid and worthy successor to Lewis Carroll's original tales.

This storyconcerns Alice Lee, an American girl with a coincidental name, visiting

Wonderland and meeting all the characters she has read about in the original

Alice book.

You are invited to share this journey with Alice Lee, who visits the DUCHESS

AND HER HOUSE, THE TEA TABLE, HUMPTY DUMPTY, THE TWEEDLES, the

RED QUEEN and so much more.

The book features 67 drawings, RICHLY ILLUSTRATED in the style of John Tenniel

which were drawn by the author's daughter, artist Anna Richards Brewster, who is

credited as "Anna M. Richards, Jr."

This novel, is one of the more important "Alice imitations," or novels inspired by

Lewis Carroll's Alice books according to Carolyn Sigler who currently is an

Associate Professor at the University of Minnesota Duluth, where she teaches

classes in Victorian literature and culture and children's literature. Her research

focuses on the process and theory of literary adaptation, and particularly on

works that represent and adapt the powerful mythoi which have circulated around

Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass, as well as the

authorship and historical identity of Lewis Carroll.

Of course, when an originally successful piece of art is followed by another

imitation, conflicts will arise. In her research, Ms. Sigler has noted: "While

Carroll's feelings about such "Alice type" books were conflicted, ranging from

interest to outrage (he later considered a lawsuit against American author Anna

Richards over her unauthorized sequel to the Alice books, A New Alice in the Old

Wonderland [1895]), curiosity seems to have predominated."

The preface offers a cute rhyme, as I'm sure Ms. Richards' was ready to face any

and all criticisms forundertaking such a taboo classic.

Despite any stigmatisms associated with the past, this book is a delightful story,

along with its illustrations, and will amuse both, young and "young at heart" with

its story line, characters and charming twists of its own.
