Henryk Sienkiewicz’s Quo Vadis is one of the great historical novels of the late nineteenth century, set in ancient Rome during the reign of Nero and centered on the love story between the Roman patrician Marcus Vinicius and the Christian maiden Lygia. Against this romance, Sienkiewicz presents a sweeping picture of imperial decadence, political cruelty, religious persecution, and the rise of Christianity within a corrupt and violent Roman world. This 1897 “New Edition,” translated by Jeremiah Curtin and issued in two illustrated volumes, is a handsome late nineteenth-century American edition of the novel, made especially appealing by the survival of the scarce original blue cloth protective jackets. Early publisher’s jackets and protective covers are often lost, making this set notable not only as an attractive illustrated edition of a major work of historical fiction, but also as a desirable example of nineteenth-century book production and preservation. Some minimal rubbing and wear, previous owner\'s inscription, some discoloration to the interior of the wrappers, else in very good + condition.
