Beautiful large-format antique edition of Dante\'s Inferno, illustrated throughout with Gustave Doré\'s celebrated black-and-white engravings.
This Thompson & Thomas edition was published in Chicago in 1901 and contains 162 pages with numerous full-page Doré illustrations. The book retains its attractive original maroon cloth binding with elaborate black decoration and gilt lettering/design on the front cover.
Condition: Good antique condition overall for a book approximately 125 years old. The illustrated pages and text remain quite attractive and the Doré plates display very well. Pages show expected age toning, with occasional minor spotting/soiling.
The original cloth boards show rubbing, fading, small stains/spots and edge/corner wear. There is wear and some separation/weakness at the inner hinge near the frontispiece/title-page area, as shown clearly in the photographs. Binding remains together, but the book should be handled with appropriate care because of its age.
