1921 High Relief Peace Dollar VF30 NGC - High Contrast \"Circulated Cameo\"
When the US mint began minting Peace Dollars in 1921 they began with this \"high relief\" design. It differs from the Peace Dollars in subsequent years in that the design is deeper and more detailed. As a result, 1921 Peace Dollars aren\'t just a coveted first year in the series they are also more unique and arguably more attractive due to the increased depth (relief) in the design.
Why did the mint change the design? It was difficult for them to maintain quality in part due to faster die wear from this design.
What is a \"circulated cameo\"? Cameos are typically found in proof coinage. Its when there is a noticeable \"pop\" in the design of the coin from the field due to the strike and tone. While not a grade, \"circulated cameo\" is used by collectors to describe high contrast circulated coins that have additional pop due to their coloring.
The beautiful grey/black fields here and the dark colors which further pop the high detail of this year\'s issue, make this particular coin a spectacular specimen of the issue. Full disclosure: At some angles to light this coin can be a bit shiny, but the grading company appropriately assigned a straight grade to the coin.
It isn\'t easy finding Peace Dollars with this kind of contrast toning; getting it on this high relief design is ideal. Because of the toning I find I appreciate much more of the detail of the design than if it were a much higher grade, even uncirculated. (Compare these photos to other higher grade listings!)
As a result, this coin isn\'t priced at typical VF30 pricing. I\'ll pay for shipping as a nod to that!
