Lindsay, Vachel. A Handy Guide for Beggars Especially Those of the Poetic Fraternity. New York: The Macmillan Company, 1923. 205 pp. Good in brown cloth. There is a minor tear on the front flyleaf. One of Lindsay's later works with a 5-page inscription to his much younger second wife, Elizabeth. Dated July 6, 1927, and written while the couple still lived in Spokane, Washington. There are also drawings by Lindsay. He assures his wife that they will survive financial issues. Vachel Lindsay (1879-1931) was born in Illinois to a solid upper-middle-class family. His parents wanted him to follow his father's career in medicine. He rebelled and studied art before turning to poetry. He travelled the country on foot, living on the sale of printed copies of his poems. For many years, he was very successful in developing a form of poetry that included chants and singing. By the time this book was published, he was under financial strain. The couple eventually moved back to Illinois and lived in his parents' home, where he committed suicide in 1931.
