Up for sale today is one of the ultra scarce keys of the 1928 $1 Silver Certificates. This is the Fr 1603 1928-C with the rare Woods-Woodin signatures. Very interesting story on these notes, as they were printed in the lowest depths of the Great Depression. Such little currency was printed during this time that the Woods-Woodin and Julian-Woodin signatures did not appear on any other denomination or class of currency except for extremely rare $5 FRN\'s. The older plates engraved for both these Silver Certificates, the red seal United States Notes, and FRN\'s were not wearing out and were simply left in service until we started coming out of the Depression and began cranking out huge numbers of Julian-Morganthau notes. So very few plates of this signature were ever engraved or printed. Almost all the plates in the presses were still 1928-A and 1928-B during this block.
This note grades a sharp Very Fine + in my opinion. It has some crispness, mild circulation and great color. Please check pics and judge condition for yourself. This note lists in the Schwartz/Lindquist book for $250 in VF and the Friedberg catalog for $225, and these keys have been going above book value recently. Grab this one while you can, it is currently the cheapest example on the market! Thanks for looking and have a great day!
