Scarce early 1933 American hardcover devoted entirely to the German Shepherd Dog, published by E. P. Dutton & Co. An interesting period reference from the formative decades of the breed\'s popularity in the United States and Great Britain.
The book discusses the German Shepherd as a pet and show dog, the breed\'s origins and history, the German Shepherd as a guide dog for the blind, its use in war, breeding, rearing puppies, schooling and obedience, working trials, breed standards and common ailments.
Of particular historical interest are the chapters “The Blind Man\'s German Shepherd Dog” and “The German Shepherd Dog in War,” documenting two important working roles of the breed during the early 20th century.
Illustrated with a black-and-white photographic frontispiece captioned “Police Dog.”
Original red cloth hardcover binding with black spine titles.
CONDITION:
Very good vintage condition. Binding is solid and tight. Original red cloth boards with black titles to spine show rubbing and wear along the edges and corners consistent with age. Spine remains clearly lettered. Endpapers are clean with a previous owner\'s small address label to the front pastedown. The 88 numbered pages are clean, bright, tight and unmarked and remain in very good condition. Photographic frontispiece is present. No dust jacket.
