1937 Japan-China Conflict Photo Book | Imperial Japan Military Illustrated:
$230.00

Description

This is an original Japanese illustrated photo book published in 1937 (Showa 12),

documenting the early phase of the Japan–China conflict that began in the same year.

In Japan at the time, this conflict was officially referred to as the “China Incident”,

as it was not initially declared a formal war.

However, it later expanded into what is now known historically as the Second Sino-Japanese War (1937–1945).

■ Historical Background

This publication was produced during a period when photographic magazines and illustrated reports played a crucial role in informing the public about overseas military operations.

The book contains a wide range of period photographs and explanations, including:

  • Imperial Japanese Army ground forces
  • Artillery units and military equipment
  • Aircraft and airfield scenes
  • Occupied cities, ports, railways, and infrastructure
  • Operational maps and geographic references
  • Frontline and rear-area documentary images

Some pages include bilingual captions (Japanese with English), reflecting the international and propaganda-oriented nature of wartime publications of the era.

■ Cultural Context: Sake Bottles & Military Commemoration (Important)

During the pre-war and wartime period in Japan, sake bottles and cups were commonly produced as commemorative items for soldiers and military-related events.

Alcohol containers such as bottles, flasks, and cups were often:

  • Distributed to soldiers upon deployment or return
  • Used in farewell and reunion ceremonies
  • Decorated with inscriptions marking military campaigns or service

This publication belongs to the same cultural context of recording, commemorating, and visually preserving military history, rather than being a modern reproduction or retrospective account.

■ Condition

  • Original pre-war item (not a reprint)
  • Age-related wear such as foxing, discoloration, stains, and surface wear
  • Overall condition consistent with printed materials from the 1930s

Please review all photos carefully for details.

■ Notes for Collectors

This item is suitable for:

  • Collectors of pre-WWII Japanese historical materials
  • Researchers of East Asian military and media history
  • Those interested in wartime photography and illustrated publications
