Original 1940 German-language pocket guide to Paris, produced specifically for German soldiers following the occupation of the city.
The striking cover reads:
“Erinnerung an Paris 1940 – Kleiner durch Paris für Deutsche Soldaten”
Translation: “Souvenir of Paris 1940 – Small Guide Through Paris for German Soldiers.”
This approximately 20-page illustrated guide describes the principal sights of Paris, including the Eiffel Tower, Arc de Triomphe, Champs-Élysées, Place de la Concorde, Notre-Dame, Trocadéro, École Militaire, Louvre area, Place Vendôme, Grand Palais, Petit Palais, Bois de Boulogne and numerous other landmarks.
The final printed page carries the important authorization:
“Mit Genehmigung Kommandant der Stadt Paris, Abt. Ic/Besichtigungen, Paris, den 1. August 1940.”
Translation: “With authorization of the Commandant of the City of Paris, Department Ic/Sightseeing, Paris, 1 August 1940.”
Large Fold-Out Paris Map
A major feature of this example is the large original folding map stored at the rear, titled:
“Paris Artistique et Historique”
The illustrated street map identifies 46 numbered Paris monuments and landmarks plus the city\'s major railway stations. The accompanying German key identifies the Eiffel Tower, Arc de Triomphe and Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, Invalides/Napoleon\'s Tomb, Louvre, Notre-Dame, Bastille, Sorbonne, Panthéon, Sacré-Cœur, Père-Lachaise and many others.
The map is marked Dompols Editions, 39 Rue Bargue, Paris XV and has German-language sightseeing information printed along the side. The surviving large map makes this example considerably more desirable than a guide lacking its map.
Condition: Used original condition with overall age toning, foxing/spotting and handling wear to the covers. Interior pages show normal age toning. Large folding map remains present and displays well with expected original fold lines and minor age/handling wear. Please examine all photographs for exact condition.
