1940s Lucite Sew-On Sweater Appliqué Vintage Women’s History Museum For Sale

The piece has a wonderfully graphic, sculptural construction, with three large translucent spherical elements—a vivid ruby-red center flanked by very dark green—set between glossy black elongated end pieces. In the light, the dark outer spheres reveal their beautiful deep green color.

Metal fittings on the reverse allow the appliqué to be sewn directly onto a sweater, dress, jacket, or other garment.

Women’s History Museum described the colored elements as Lucite and the black base as “either bakelite or celluloid.” The materials have not been independently tested, so the black elements are represented here according to the original seller’s description rather than as definitively identified Bakelite or celluloid. Their original listing dates the piece to the 1940s.

A particularly unusual piece of vintage dress ornament: decorative, functional, and strikingly modern in its geometric combination of glossy black, deep green, and translucent red.

Condition:
Very good vintage condition with light age-appropriate wear. The Lucite and glossy black elements present beautifully, with minor surface marks. The metal sew-on hardware on the reverse shows some oxidation/discoloration consistent with age. No cracks or major damage noted.
