The Turner Inquirer - May 1941 - Vol. 2 No. 4

Original amateur-press periodical headed “Published When Possible,” featuring “Editor Interviews Stirling Hayden” by Shirley Turner. The interview records Turner and her cousin Patsy Wilkinson meeting the 24-year-old actor in a Washington hotel soon after his first picture, Virginia. It discusses his height, long experience at sea, entry into Hollywood, Paramount contract dated May 23, 1940, attitude toward acting, and the draft. A halftone photograph of Hayden appears within the article, which continues on page 4.

Historical importance

AFI identifies Virginia as Hayden\'s acting debut and notes that Paramount temporarily changed the spelling of his first name from Sterling to Stirling. Turner Classic Movies likewise notes that he was billed as “Stirling” during his first year. The CIA\'s historical profile says the sailor-turned-actor left Hollywood later in 1941 for wartime service and eventually served with the OSS. This contemporary interview therefore captures Hayden at the very beginning of his screen career.

Market

No exact public copy or exact match was located. A related 1941 NAPA amateur-press journal sold on for $79.95. The scarce amateur-publication format, dated interview, early-career content, and original printed Hayden portrait support a $129.95 fixed-price test.

Condition

Approximately 8.5 x 6.5 inches. The photographed page shows moderate uniform age toning and browning, darker edge toning, light surface soil and handling wear, minor edge and corner wear, and faint horizontal creasing or rippling. Text and the printed portrait remain clear. Only the front page was supplied and photographed; page count, completeness, binding, reverse, and interior condition were not independently verified. Please inspect the photograph carefully.
