1950s Zanzibar Africa Tourist Brochure Map Stone Town Sultan Travel Kenya For Sale

This is an original What to See and Do in Zanzibar tourist brochure from the Zanzibar Protectorate, with the Protectorate\'s emblem on the cover. It was produced by the Tourist Information Bureau, Zanzibar, with acknowledgements to the East Africa Tourist Travel Association and the Tourist Travel Committee, Zanzibar, and printed by the Mombasa Times Ltd., Fort Jesus Road, Mombasa.

It dates from the final years of British protectorate rule under the Sultan, before Zanzibar\'s independence in December 1963 and the revolution of January 1964 that ended the sultanate. It\'s a genuine snapshot of a vanished political world.

The cover has a Gothic-lettered title over a photograph of a woman weaving a basket before a carved Zanzibari door.

The brochure unfolds to reveal:

• The Tourist Information Bureau and Handicrafts Showrooms on the sea front beside the Old Arab Fort, and a description of the Protectorate, including the Sultan\'s coastal strip of Kenya and the Lamu archipelago, the islands\' size, distances to world cities, and period population figures
• Travel details: sea connections from Europe, America, and Africa, and twice-daily East African Airways flights to Dar es Salaam, Tanga, Mombasa, and Nairobi
• Island tours: the Short Tour via Bububu, the Kidichi Persian Baths, and Kizimbani; Mangapwani Beach and its hidden slave chamber; and sites such as Livingstone House, where the explorer stayed before his last expedition in 1866, and the ruined Marahubi and Mtoni palaces
• Tariffs and hotels: taxis, rickshaws, motor boats, and licensed guides, plus the Zanzibar Hotel, Hotel Pigalle, Central Hotel, Royal Hotel, and English Club (founded 1888), with prices in shillings
• Practical notes: posts, cables, and radio telephone; health precautions, including malaria prophylaxis; and \"For Ladies . . . A Reminder,\" a period note asking women visitors to dress modestly in the old town
• A map of Zanzibar Island, with eight numbered tour routes and a table of tour distances
• Photographs of Main Street and a narrow Stone Town street with a fruit stall

This brochure will appeal to collectors of East African and Indian Ocean history, colonial and late-empire travel ephemera, Zanzibar and Stone Town history, Swahili coast history, and vintage maps. Pre-revolution Zanzibar tourist material is uncommon.
