1952 Vintage Serigraph Abstract Expressionist Midcentury Modern Diran Dohanian:
$380.00

Diran Dohanian was a polymath of the 20th-century Boston art scene. A graduate of the School of the Museum of Fine Arts (SMFA) and later Harvard University (MA \'55, PhD \'64), his work bridges the gap between the expressive materiality of \"Boston Expressionism\" and the intellectual rigor of academic modernism.

  • Museum Pedigree: At the time this print was executed (1952), Dohanian was a rising star in the American printmaking scene. His work was featured in the prestigious Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) 1953-54 \"Young American Printmakers\" exhibition.

  • Scholarship & Influence: Dohanian went on to become a world-renowned authority on South Asian art. His deep understanding of sacred geometry and ancient forms often informed the \"quiet\" power of his earlier abstract works.

In the early 1950s, Dohanian was part of a vibrant New England circle of artists moving away from pure representation toward a lyrical, graphic abstraction.

  • Associations: His work from this period shares a visual language with other MoMA-exhibited printmakers of the era, such as Eugene Bennett and Sidney Chafetz.

  • Regional Context: Based in Belmont, Massachusetts, Dohanian was an active participant in the regional shows that defined the \"New England Modern\" movement, frequently exhibiting alongside the faculty and alumni of the SMFA and Harvard\'s Carpenter Center.

Item Details & Title Variations

This specific example retains the artist\'s original 1952 inventory label on the verso. While this early state is titled \"In the Garden,\" it is worth noting for the collector that later numbered editions of this same image were released under the title \"Spring-like.\" Those subsequent iterations were typically signed and numbered on the front, whereas this remains in its original, early-state presentation with the primary documentation on the reverse.

  • Title: In the Garden (also known as \"Spring-like\")

  • Artist: Diran K. Dohanian (Signed on the original verso label)

  • Date: March 1952

  • Medium: Original Serigraph (Silkscreen)

  • Dimensions: Approximately 15\" x 20\" (at the edge of the original matting).

  • Provenance: Retains the original yellow inventory label documenting the artist\'s Belmont, MA address and original 1952 metadata—a vital piece of physical evidence for the history of the \"Providence collection\" and New England modernism.

Condition Note

The print is presented in its original mid-century matting. The colors remain remarkably crisp, showing the characteristic \"thick\" ink application of early serigraphy. The original archival label on the reverse is fully intact and provides excellent biographical context.
