1956 Monterey, CA. Oil on Board Plein Air Seascape Signed F.H. Cutting PERFECT.:
$1100.00

I bought this fine seascape at an estate sale near Stanford University, justsouth ofSan Francisco sometime last year. The artist isFrank Cutting (1872-1964).
I believe he may have painted this near Asilomar State Beach, but local lore saysCutting\'sfavorite place to paint was a few miles south of there, at Point Lobos. Inhis lateryears, he had a studio in Pacific Grove.
I live in San Jose, which adjoins the smaller city of Campbell, where Cutting madehis home. Cutting isa very popular artist in this region, and he was also lucky enoughto beappreciated during his lifetime. He had many exhibitions of his work overthe years, and even now, the Carmel Art Assn., to which he belonged, isoffering 2of his seascapes, pricing each at more than $1,000... and theyare much smaller thanthis one.
This painting is so big, I\'m doing Local Pickup Only on it. I\'m in San Jose, and I\'ll meet you at a Starbucks just off the freeway of your choice, dependingon where you\'re driving from.
Below, I\'ve added a brief biography of Cutting.
Dimensions:Frame: 29 1/2 inches high by 35 1/2 inches across.The Visual Image measures 23 1/2 inches high by 29 1/4 inches across.Many thanks for looking!
Francis Harvey Cutting Bio from San Jose History\'s Facebook Page:
Artist and long time Campbell Resident Francis Harvey \"Frank\" Cutting opened a studio his newly built home on Harrison Avenue (originally numbered \"93,\" later re-numbered \"+25.\") in downtown Campbell om 1924. He continued to paint Central Coast Seascapes and landscapes for the next 40 years, until he died at the age of 91.
Frank Cutting was born in Iowa in 1872 and moved with his family to Campbell in 1893. He attended and graduated from the Normal school (now San Jose State) in 1987. He taught school for a couple of years after that, and then went into ranching in Campbell, although painting remained his first love.
The 1900 census shows Clara Snavely as a boarder at his parents\' home. They had known each other in Iowa, and she came to California in 1900, marrying Frank in 1903. They had one son, Theodore.
Frank ran his ranch for the next 29 years, although he continued to paint. In 1920, he opened a studio in Pacific Grove, CA. When an uncle died, leaving him enough money, he turned to painting full time in the early 1920\'s, studying at the University of Pacific, then located in San Jose. It was at this time that he moved back to Campbell and built his home on Harrison, with the aid of his son, Theodore.
A description of Frank\'s professional work from Sotheby\'s Art Gallery\'s website:\"A prolific impressionist painter, he used a bright palette to compose vivid plain air landscapes and coastal views of Northern California. Over a long career, Cutting exhibited widely and with success. He was the subject of numerous one-man shows including exhibitions at the California State Fair (1923, 1930-32), Stanford University Art Gallery (1925, 1928, 1933, 1939) and the Oakland Art Gallery, later the Oakland Museum (1934, 1938).\"
Clara and Frank remained married until Clara died in 1962. In 1963, at age 91, Cutting married Lora Reynolds, who was also a local painter. She and his son Theodore, survived him after he died in June of 1964.
