Original Vintage 1960s Shakey\'s Pizza Pizzeria Restaurant Menu 57th J Streets Sacramento California
The first Shakey\'s Pizza Parlor opened April 30, 1954 at 57th and J Streets in Sacramento, in a remodeled grocery-store building, founded by Sherwood \'Shakey\' Johnson — whose nickname came from nerve damage after a WWII malaria infection — and Ed Plummer. It pioneered the family-style beer-and-pizza parlor concept and was the flagship of what grew into a national chain, though it was known less for pizza than for live Dixieland jazz: Johnson played piano himself and hired the original Silver Dollar Jazz Band, and the parlor sponsored a jazz program on a regional radio network that helped drive Sacramento\'s jazz revival. By 1967, when Johnson sold his interest, there were 272 Shakey\'s parlors across the United States. This original 57th & J Street location remained in business until the mid-1990s; the chain still exists and the building has been described as a cherished Sacramento landmark, but the founding parlor is no longer operating.
