Photographs by Richard Avedon
Text by James Baldwin
Atheneum Publishers, New York, 1964
Original 1964 first edition of one of Richard Avedon and James Baldwin\'s most important collaborations. The large-format volume combines Avedon\'s black-and-white photography with Baldwin\'s text examining American society, race, identity and alienation during the early 1960s. Bibliographic sources identify the 1964 Atheneum issue as the first edition.
This example retains the original matching white slipcase, an important feature because many surviving copies have lost it.
Production credits shown in this copy include:
- Photographs by Richard Avedon
- Text by James Baldwin
- Designed by Marvin Israel
- Photographic prints by Earl Steinbicker
- Manufactured by C. J. Bucher Ltd., Lucerne, Switzerland
- Printed in Switzerland
Large-format hardcover, approximately 14 × 11 inches.
A previous owner applied an illustrated “EX LIBRIS ROBERT LEWIS” bookplate to the front pastedown.
The white exterior surfaces show noticeable age-related spotting/soiling and handling wear, and the metallic panels have scratching. The slipcase likewise shows age and shelf wear. See photographs, which form an important part of the condition description.
No signatures by Avedon or Baldwin are being represented.
