Positively-Postal
- GB1971 Isle of Jethou \"By Emergency Strike Post International Mail\" plain pre-decimal cover to France
- three local stamps from the Isle of Jehtou, a small island that is part of the Bailiwick of Guernsey in the Channel Islands
- the three stamps features seabirds, Black-backed Gull, Shag and Puffin
- these stamps were first issued in 1961 and have the words \"Europa 1961\" stamped over them
- in this instance these were repurposed to send mail internationally, in this case to France
- two of the three stamps (Black-faced Gull and Puffin designs) have had the coat of the arms in the top left-hand corner overprinted with \"Strike Mail\", the name \"Isle of Jethou\" has been crossed out xxxxxx and their original values printed over with a black dot and overprinted 1/- and 3/-
- for some reason the value of 1/- Shag stamp has been left as it was. Wording \"Strike Mail\" and the crosses have been applied to this stamp but have missed the coat of arms and island name so only partially cover them over
- 0.50 FRF red definitive stamp featuring Marianne de Bequet is affixed in the top right hand corner cancelled with a slogan postmark marking a forthcoming event \"Customs Night\" in Le Havre on 6th March 1971
- the three local stamps have served as postage to get the cover to France (postal services in the U.K. were on strike at this time) while the French definitive stamp has served as postage within France to its final destination
- also interesting to note the local stamps are in pre-decimal currency as expected but have also been overprinted in pre-decimal values, less than a week before decimal currency was introduced in the U.K.
- envelope measures approx. 18cm wide x 10cm high. There is a stiffener/insert in the envelope but I think you would need to cut open the sides of the cover to unwrap and get that out
