Sister Ships Fought in Spain, This One Served StatesideDESCRIPTIONVintage 8x10 photograph of a Northrop Delta 1D-6, registration NC14220, one of just eight Delta 1D Executive transports Northrop ever built. The typed caption card affixed to the mount identifies the aircraft as a "Delta 1-A," but registry and production records confirm it as the 1D-6 variant, a small but meaningful correction since only a single Delta 1A was ever produced, the 1933 TWA airmail prototype, which was lost in a crash that same year, so this could not be that airframe. NC14220's five sister Executive Deltas, built with serial numbers just ahead of it, had far rougher fates: three were shipped off to fly in the Spanish Civil War starting in 1936, one went on to Australia and later Royal Australian Air Force service, and another burned in a Pan American hangar fire in 1938. NC14220 itself stayed in the United States, later serving with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers from 1942 before being scrapped during World War II. The photograph shows the aircraft with its registration and a company emblem visible on the tail along with the large fleet number "27" painted on the fuselage, engine turning and the propeller a blur of motion, captured from a dramatic low angle on the ramp with another aircraft visible in the background. This print comes from the Aitken Collection, a large single owner archive of vintage aviation photography, and carries a period photo lab stamp on the reverse from MDC St. Louis dated 1979, identifying it as a company print pulled from the original press negative rather than an original period pull. It is represented and priced accordingly as a 1979 archival print, not an original period photograph.
